Personality test: Lion – Beaver – Otter – Golden Retriever

I was sitting at a post-event dinner. It’s early days in the programme, the group is still forming and despite the small group of 12, not everyone knows each other yet.

I end up sitting next to Mr D. He’s older, smart, grounded – a nice family man with a strong entrepreneurial and business streak. Nothing unusual really.

Until he brings up the a personality test. And I’m a girl. Which automatically means I’m hooked into the conversation. Like glue : )

5 minute personality test by Dr Gary Smalley
He brings up the “Lion – Beaver – Otter – Golden Retriever” personality test created by Dr Gary Smalley. I’ve never heard of it before. I’m in shock. I know the Enneagram, Astrology, Human Dynamics, Myers Briggs, Disc, Numerology etc-.

So he runs over through the 4 animals. Describes them in detail. And it’s obvious which one I am cos my eyes light up and sparkle when he mentions the golden retriever and otter.

So that’s me. And I feel slightly exposed by this conversation.

But the lovely thing is he pointed out how creating and showcasing love stories is so inline with my golden retriever – otter personality. Which put a big smile on my face cos moments prior I was having a self doubting moment : )

So here is the test (thanks to Sage Strategies). It’s pretty straight forward.

Choose the item in each line that is most like you and put a 4. Then pick the item that is next most like you and put a 3. Then 2 and then 1 which is least like you. Do this across the page for each list of descriptors.

1. ____ Likes authority ____Enthusiastic ____ Sensitive Feelings ____Likes Instruction
2. ____ Takes Charge ____Takes Risks ____ Loyal ____ Accurate
3. ____ Determined ____ Visionary ____ Calm ____Consistent
4. ____ Enterprising ____ Verbal ____ Enjoys Routine ____ Predictable
5. ____ Competitive ____ Promoter ____ Dislikes Change ____ Practical
6. ____ Problem Solver ____ Enjoys Popularity ____ Gives in To Others ____ Factual
7. ____ Productive ____ Fun-loving ____ Avoids Confrontations ____ Responsible
8. ____ Bold ____ Likes Variety ____ Sensitive ____ Prefers Perfection
9. ____ Decision Maker ____ Spontaneous ____ Nurturing ____ Detail Oriented
10. ____ Persistent ____ Inspirational ____ Peace Maker ____ Analytical

Then add up the totals … simple : )

Lion – Column 1
This personality likes to lead. The lion is good at making decisions and is very goal-oriented. They enjoy challenges, difficult assignments, and opportunity for advancement. Because lions are thinking of the goal, they can step on people to reach it. Lions can be very aggressive and competitive. Lions must learn not to be too bossy or to take charge in other’s affairs.

> Strength: Goal-oriented, strong, direct
> Weakness: Argumentative, too dictatorial
> Limitation: Doesn’t understand that directness can hurt others, hard time expressing

Otter – Column 2
Otters are very social creature. Otter personalities love people. They enjoys being popular and influencing and motivating others. Otter can sometimes be hurt when people do not like them. Otter personalities usually have lots of friends, but not deep relationships. They love to goof-off. (They are
notorious for messy rooms.) Otters like to hurry and finish jobs. (Jobs are not often done well.) The otter personality is like Tigger in Winnie The Pooh.

> Strength: People person, open, positive
> Weakness: Talks too much, too permissive
> Limitation: Remembering past commitments, follow through with discipline

Golden Retriever – Column 3
Good at making friends. Very loyal. Retriever personalities do not like big changes. They look for security. Can be very sensitive. Very caring. Has deep relationships, but usually only a couple of close friends. Wants to be loved by everyone. Looks for appreciation. Works best in a limited situation with a steady work pattern.

> Strength: Accommodating, calm, affirming
> Weakness: Indecisive, indifferent, unable to express emotional, too soft on other people
> Limitation: Seeing the need to be more assertive, holding others accountable

Beaver – Column 4
Organized. Beavers think that there is a right way to do everything and they want to do it exact that way. Beaver personalities are very creative. They desire to solve everything. Desire to take their time and do it right. Beavers do not like sudden changes. They need reassurance.

> Strength: High standards, order, respect
> Weakness: Unrealistic expectations of self & others, too perfect.
> Limitation: Seeing the optimistic side of things, expressing flexibility

Profile summaries thanks to Sage Strategies

I just love personality profiles. Helps you (I really mean me) accept people for who they are. And being a girl, I love exploring relationship dynamics.

So … which one are you???

This means that you grew up with strong personalities around you and you was suppressed, trying to be what they want you to be. Which brings clear answer – the real you is a golden retriever.

Otter – Lion – wow sums me up perfectly! Lol ….love the messy room…. I spend so many attempts to try to clean my room but to no avail, it is hilarious

  6. Darlene says:

Enjoyed taking this test… I scored… 27, 23,23,20 And yes I am the golden retriever… I like the fact that I am pretty even keeled.. but read your comment when someone asked what getting 25 across the board meant… I would agree with the comment.. as I am a people pleaser.. Most do not see me this way… they say I am not sensitive.. that is only because I have learned to show my LION… I love to be in charge… but I am NOT bold… Someone can run over me easily… even my 10 year old.. who is defiantly a lion…

This is a wonderful exercise.. I am going to use this in my meeting tomorrow.. I think it will help me understand my team members and help me to help them be more successful in life…

    • Darlene says:

oops…did my addition wrong.. I knew something was wrong as it did not add up to 100… column 1 and 2 were 23 column 3 and 4 were 27 so guess I am more golden retriever beaver..

i’ve tried this test and my scores are 27 21 26 26, how do i interpret my score ? because i have same score in golden retriever and beaver.
Is there any categorization to determine high score ? how do we read the result, is it single category (just read the highest score) or we have primary and secondary personality category ? Thank you

  8. Glee says:

Concerning scores that are the same or close on all four types…the authors of the book this test came from would say that is indicative of a balanced personality. The point of the book is that if we are highly dominant in one personality, there are things we need to learn to bring that trait into balance because its strengths also has “side effects” that are damaging to relationships with the other types.
